Hiring a Contractor

If you have decided to remodel your home or build one from the ground up, hiring a contractor is the best way to go about it correctly. Now comes the task of finding the right one for your job. If you're like many others, this can be an overwhelming process, but take heart. This article was written to assist you in finding out what you need to know before choosing the right contractor.

Obtain Quotes

It is standard practice to obtain quotes from at least three different contractors prior to making a decision. Ask to see their portfolios, including examples of projects they've been a part of. That way, if you see something similar to what you're planning to do, you'll know they have first hand experience in that specific craft. It's also an excellent way to gather more ideas.

Check References

Ask for and actually call on references given to you by your prospects. This can provide you a wealth of information on the professionals you are potentially going to be dealing with. Check them out on online forums, and research them through the Better Business Bureau and your local Homebuilders' Association.

Bonded and Insured

Regardless of the extent of the projects you are hiring the professional to complete, you are well advised to choose only from those who are bonded and insured. This protects you from financial and legal responsibility if any of the workers become injured while on your property, as well as protecting you from monetary loss if the workers inadvertently damage your property during the course of the work.

Equally important is ensuring that the professional you hire is trained, licensed and certified in the specific skill or trade relative to your project. This is for the safety of your family as well as for that of the worker, particularly in regard to electric or plumbing work.

Other Considerations

When you finally hire a contractor for your job, it is best to include in your contractual agreement how payment will be handled, and on what date the work will be completed. Consider negotiating a reward for work completed early, as well as compensation for you if the job surpasses the end date unfinished. Always obtain everything in writing and be specific in your expectations of each other. This prevents miscommunications that can prove to quickly sour the deal.

Advantages of Curtains over Blinds

Are you thinking of getting a good window covering? Are you having a hard time deciding if you should get curtains or blinds? Well, here are 10 advantages of curtains over blinds.

A Better Life Through Interior Decorating

The way your home looks can have an intimate impact on the overall quality of your life. This is a concept which may not seem obvious at first, and yet when you come to realize what a home really means on a psychological, a functional, and even a spiritual level, the influence which this space has on your life can suddenly become very clear.
One of the major aspects of “the home” is that it is a place where you feel safe to let your guard down. When your mind is in such a state of relaxation, it tends to become more open to the acquisition of ideas, concepts, and to influence from outside elements. This means that the visual and emotional aspects of your home are going to have a rather profound effect on your overall psyche.
Even more than just affecting your mind psychologically, your home is actually a part of how you think of yourself as a person. Everyone has a concept of self, and the way you define that concept in your head is made up of a number of different factors including your job, your family, and even something as innocuous as the way you dress. One of the major factors in this determination is the state of your home. Being the physical center of your personal world, the look and more importantly, the feel of your personal habitat is a major philosophical element in any determination of character.
Since your home has such a deep impact on your personality, you should strive to make it an environment which fosters the kind of person you want to be. If you tend to be anxious and stressed out, getting violently angry at every little setback, you may want to develop a space which is a tranquil paradise of peace and relaxation. However, if you are lethargic and unmotivated, finding it difficult to get up the energy to do almost anything in life, then you may want to try and create a home full of interesting and inspiring elements, bold colors, and invigorating decorative pieces. While these subtle personality effects are powerful, the function of your home has an even more obvious impact on your day to day life. Anyone who has ever lost their keys in a cluttered den knows that the wrong environment at home can have a negative impact on your ability to get things done in life.
In its simplest form, the home is where you keep all of your possessions. Some of the things you own are worthless, others are priceless, and everything else falls somewhere in between. The problem is that many people don’t have a strategy for incorporating all of these different elements into a space. The result is often chaos, with useless decorative mementos making it impossible to find anything you need, or important functional items being placed in prominent unattractive places so that they will not be lost. This is a problem which could be easily cured by simply getting a little more organized. Your home also affects your function because it is a location you can use for a variety of purposes. You can conduct business meetings there, have an intimate date at home, or throw parties or family reunions where you reconnect with the people you care about. However, your ability to pull off events such as these will be determined largely by the appearance and state of your home. If you are trying to conduct business you will need a space that has a formal air, while throwing a party makes having a home with lots of space and good flow vital.
The function of relationships with other people is actually the most important way your habitat can affect your life. While it is possible to live in isolation, the part of life which has the deepest meaning is when you connect with other people. If the spaces in your home are inviting and make others feel comfortable, it will automatically make your social life easier. Even if you prefer to party at someone else’s place, you will still want to have people over on occasion, even if it is just to meet. When they get there, their concept of who you are will be affected by the way you live, almost as much as your own is.
The home is an environment that exerts an enormous amount of influence over how you live your life. Luckily, you can control this environment, making decorative and functional changes as your goals change from day to day. In this way you can exert a subtle influence over the world around you, and yourself, through the simple application of a little interior decorating.

Types of Contractors

There are many types of contactors present to help you out in starting your home  project.

Each of these kinds has their own set of specialties or skills that you can choose from, depending on what specific type of job you want to achieve. Some other contractor firm forms a group wherein you can easily consult because on their wide varieties of specialists or called as subcontractors whom you can directly inquire depending on what type of job you’re looking for. Choosing the right contractor can save you a lot of energy, time and money. It also enables you to do extra things to make your home investment a perfect one. If you still don’t know what specific type of contractor you would be choosing here are a few examples:

  • Builder

This type of contractor is a specialist for a large renovation type of work or providing extension jobs. They usually hire or incorporate other various subcontractors to perform and execute jobs evenly according to their specializations. They usually provide a site foreman to the project in order to monitor each worker and manage as well the whole building process. They have a usual contractor fee of $250,000 per project.

  • Supervised Trades Groups

This type of contractor is a specialist for smaller building projects, like home maintenance and home repair. They are the ones who manage tasks from a minor one to a mid-size renovation type of jobs without any architect on site present. This is the type of contractor you would be choosing if you need expert supervision and multi-trade knowledge are required.

  • Individual Tradesman

If you know what specific work is required, can communicate your needs and can supervise the completion of your project, you can employ an individual tradesperson when the task is small. By this you can easily pinpoint directly to your contractor the problems and needs you want to achieve or to be removed. Some other home investors may hire several tradesmen for a certain project, in order for it to be accomplished earlier. Hiring more tradesmen may require you to apply for an Owner Builder permit and should also check with a local Building Surveyor or a related Council.

An old-fashioned way and still considered as the best way to acquire an appropriate contractor would be seeking out recommendations and various information from someone you trust regarding to what type of work are you planning to execute. Nowadays, finding someone who can answer your problems is not that hard because of the presence of television advertisements, trade associations and building websites in the internet. It is advisable to use your judgement skills towards people but should also seek written work-related references and monitor each of your choices.

Try asking yourself later on, what qualities do I need for a certain contractor? From this you can assess each and every step you make in finishing your project by carefully choosing the appropriate contractor to fit in. Try a matchmaking technique of the contractors to the type of project you want. Then try to choose a contractor that can communicate to you and can listen to your suggestions and recommendations. The contractor staff and together with the choice of subcontractors are the ones who are critical to the success of the project, therefore one should have a ready access to these people and can pick up workers easily when the project has been granted to have its operation.

As points to remember in choosing the right contractor for your home investment project, always choose a contractor that has a good reputation when it comes to this type of project or job. Avoid contractors that are too “dubious” in behaviour. A contractor with an excellent public profile or experience is a very good choice because they won’t do anything risky to damage their reputation by means of inferior workmanship. Arrange properly the price both parties agree on. In most cases having a low contract price may cause poor quality of work or an incomplete job. Never turn a pizza into slices wherein you can swallow it wholly. If you can afford to pay the right price for contractors then do it.
